Warning – Rio Piedras Bridge

A warning to anyone going up La Junta by foot, the suspension bridge over Río Piedras is not currently safe to cross. After a few days of heavy rain at the end of May thousands of tons of debris was washed down, ripping out the foundations on one side of the bridge, leaving uprooted trees everywhere and changing the course of the river, leaving it uncrossable by foot. It was then repaired by some local volunteers but since then one of the walkway slats has fallen off.As it currently stands horses can cross as before but hikers need to find another way. Luckily a fallen tree provides a safe and secure crossing point. If you follow the path down towards the river instead of up to the bridge you arrive at the newly deposited sand and gravel. Just upriver from here you will see a tree crossing the river near to where the planks were cut to repair the bridge. If you’re heading up to La Junta we hope you find this helpful. Let us know how you get on!
